Results can be deceiving, yet so many people won’t work with a wellness coach unless that coach can promise results. I completely understand wanting to make a worthwhile investment, but here’s the thing about results: Sometimes, we measure the wrong thing.
For decades, I measured my health by the number on my scale. When that number increased, so did my shame and guilt.
Why didn’t I have stronger willpower? What if I get a chronic disease because I’m not strong enough to cut out chocolate?
I get that it sounds silly to people who don’t tie their worth to their body size, but iykyk. And it ain’t fun.
Perspective Shift
Think about your best friend(s) in the whole wide world. You love them, right? Prove it. There has to be some metric. Since you love them, you should be able to rate, on a scale of 1-10, how much you love them, shouldn’t you? Or pinpoint the exact day you started loving them? Can you measure how much you love them on a scale?
No. Of course not. Love is complex, and so is your health. And when we tie our health exclusively to our body weight, we set ourselves up for the kind of disappointment and self-loathing that sabotages our progress before it can even begin.
The Holistic Approach
Something similar happens when you take a holistic approach to health. Like friendships, health improves incrementally. But unlike friendships, our health is often improving in places we cannot see because we either don’t know where to look or aren’t looking in the right places.
A lot of people don’t know that the quickest way to improve your overall health has less to do with a declining number on the scale and more to do with knowing what’s going on with our digestion and hormones.
That’s why when I work with clients, we celebrate the accumulation of all the minor shifts you’ve made to feel more energetic, at peace, and confident about your healing trajectory.
It’s hard to watch people get hung up by the number on the scale. Sure, you can lose 40 pounds, but at what cost? Are you missing out on shared experiences with friends in favor of the gym? Are you passing on a piece of your grandma’s 90th birthday cake? Worse still, maybe you’re reinforcing a mindset that “I am not enough as I am.” Yes, we can measure the 40 pounds, but how do we measure the other suffering areas of our wellness?
3 Reasons You’ve Got To Try Wellness Coaching:
- Changing your behaviors, thought processes, and lifestyle, in general, is challenging, but it doesn’t have to be. The temptation to slip back into old patterns might feel strong when your new habits feel lonely or overwhelming. but making those changes doesn’t have to feel lonely or overwhelming. That’s why a wellness coach is key. I’ll be there to guide you when you fall off track and can help you illuminate why it happened while allowing you to feel seen and understood.
- Furthermore, no one wants you to succeed as much as I do. I am invested in YOU, and I have the skills and experience to see patterns that you may not (because you’re busy living your life!). Because I’ve worked with several people on their quest to lead a healthier life, I can foresee obstacles you may not even consider and therefore help you problem solve before there ever is an issue.
- Plus, a coach can free up your mental load. Because of the one-on-one nature of coaching, not only can I help you prioritize which strategy to experiment with next, but I can also customize the strategy to fit your lifestyle and needs. Want to begin meditating but don’t know where to start? I’ll pull several meditations for you to try so you don’t have to scour Headspace to find one that fits your vibe for the day. Desire more knowledge on your mind-body type? I’ll gather resources for you to skim through at your leisure with guided action steps to help you integrate the teachings into your life.
You don’t even have to take my word for it. Just listen to what one of my most recent clients said: “I’m sure I speak for every one of your clients when I say you have changed my life for the better. You inspire me unlike anyone else ever has, and I am so grateful our paths crossed.”
My Promise To You
I won’t promise results because I’m not a miracle worker. A coaching relationship is just that — a relationship. But, I can promise you that we’ll co-create together; I’ll show up and do everything in my power to educate, inspire, and support you, but you have to do the work, speak up when a practice feels inauthentic, be honest about what practices you haven’t done, and be open-minded enough to try something new.
Are you willing to invest real time and money into yourself in a world full of quick fixes? Will you bet on yourself in a world that’s hellbent on meticulously measuring growth, knowing perfectly well that some of our most profound change cannot be measured?
