Understanding Social Rest: How Connections Impact Your Well-Being

Today, we’re closing out our series on rest with a topic that might sound like an oxymoron at first—Social Rest. Unlike other types of rest, which focus on turning inward, social rest is about renewal through meaningful connections with people who uplift, support, and truly understand you.

What is Social Rest?

Think about the last time you spent time with someone who “gets” you—no pretense, no need to perform. It’s like taking a deep breath of fresh air, isn’t it? That’s the essence of social rest. It’s the kind of rest that fills your cup, leaving you energized and uplifted.

One of my clients, Sarah*, had a breakthrough after reflecting on her relationships. She had always been surrounded by friends, but many of her social interactions left her feeling emotionally drained. Together, we worked on identifying the people who truly understood and uplifted her. By investing more time in these relationships, Sarah felt a significant shift in her energy and well-being.

Nurturing Meaningful Social Connections

So, how do you cultivate enriching relationships? Start by being mindful of the people who bring positivity into your life. Surround yourself with those who make you feel seen, heard, and supported. As the popular saying goes, quality over quantity—it’s better to have a few close, genuine relationships than a crowd of superficial connections.

Another coaching client, Marcus*, learned this lesson firsthand. He used to feel obligated to attend every social event, even when it exhausted him. By setting boundaries and focusing on relationships that energized him, Marcus found he had more mental clarity and emotional peace simply because he wasn’t overextending himself socially.

On the flip side, don’t feel guilty about stepping back from interactions that drain you. It’s not about cutting people out of your life but balancing your social energy.

Take Action: Reflect on Your Social Energy

Here’s a gentle nudge for the week: take a moment to evaluate your current relationships. Which ones give you energy, and which ones might be draining you? Think about how you can invest more time in the relationships that bring you joy and peace. And for the relationships that are draining you, remember the importance of regulating your nervous system. It’s a personal journey that may require setting boundaries, but the payoff is worth it.

Remember, this journey is deeply personal, and while it can be challenging, it’s worth every step. Take your time, trust the process, and surround yourself with people who light up your soul.
